Apple announced i Phone OS 1 at the i Phone keynote on January 9, 2007, and it was released to the public alongside the original i Phone on June 29, 2007.

No official name was given on its initial release; Apple marketing literature simply stated the i Phone runs a version of Apple's desktop operating system, OS X.

i Phone OS 2.2.1 is the final version of i Phone OS 2. Apple announced i Phone OS 3 in March, 2009, and it was released to the public on June 17, 2009 alongside the i Phone 3GS.

i Phone OS 3 was compatible with all i OS devices released up to that time, but not all features were available on the original i Phone.

Before then, Apple marketing simply stated that i Phone ran a version of Mac OS X made specifically for i Phone. It was officially renamed i OS on June 7, 2010 with the announcement and introduction of i Pad.
