Skype and other telecommunication platforms are being used by therapists and counsellors (amongst other healthcare practitioners) to carry out treatment at a distance.

It is easy to use, readily available, has free and paid services, and connects users to approximately 600 million people worldwide.

But tomorrow the web will be plastered in a different sort of pop-up as some the tech's biggest companies fight to maintain a free and open internet.

Last May, the Federal Communications Commission began the process of dismantling the net neutrality rules it adopted in early 2015.

It was also one of the 100 groups that signed on to an open letter to the FCC in 2014 calling for strong net neutrality rules.

In some ways, Amazon is an unlikely champion of net neutrality.

The Legal and Regulatory Affairs staff at the American Psychological Association (APA) Practice Organisation also point out the issues related to Skype when considering online therapy: “Some organizations recommend not using Skype and similar web-based platforms because of concerns related to HIPAA requirements.

These agreements are essential to be HIPAA compliant, but more importantly this lack of obligation leaves clients vulnerable to mistreatment and their health information being misused.Tomorrow, sites across the web will place alerts on their pages encouraging people to send letters to the FCC asking the agency not to jettison net neutrality.Hundreds of companies and organizations plan to participate in this so-called "Day of Action," from giants such as Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Netflix to Reddit, Etsy, Porn Hub, Spotify, and even some smaller internet service providers like Ting and Sonic.Skype is not HIPAA compliant, as a spokesman recently commented: “Skype is not a business associate subject to HIPAA, nor have we entered into any contractual arrangements with covered entities to create HIPAA compliant privacy and security obligations.” - Harvey Grasty, Skype representative Protected Health Information (PHI) is any information about health and treatment that is linked to a specific individual.HIPAA compliance ensures that the PHI of every individual (under the covered entity) is secure and protected.

Voters flooded their representatives with emails, phone calls, and letters, and the two bills died an early death.
